En esta disposición, el conjunto motor-embrague-cambio montado en la parte delantera acciona el eje trasero suspendido sobre ballestas a través de un árbol cardán con dos juntas universales. Las ruedas delanteras se suspenden de forma independiente entre sí mediante muelles helicoidales.

Esta instalación es una de las más antiguas y se ha mantenido sin cambios durante muchos años.

Algunas de las ventajas que ofrece este sistema son las siguientes.

Ventajas de la tracción trasera con motor delantero:

1. La distribución equilibrada del peso entre las ruedas delanteras y traseras garantiza buenas características de conducción.
2. Para facilitar el movimiento de dirección de la rueda delantera, el motor ocupa el ancho reducido entre los arcos.
3. Detrás de los asientos traseros hay disponible un gran maletero que proporciona mayor capacidad de carga y espacio para facilitar el movimiento del cuerpo.
4. La accesibilidad a diversos componentes, como el motor, la transmisión y el eje trasero, es mejor en comparación con otros diseños.
5. Los mecanismos de control, como el pedal del acelerador, el estrangulador, el embrague y la caja de cambios, son cortos y sencillos.
6. Para aprovechar al máximo el flujo de aire natural generado por los vehículos, el radiador frontal absorbe el movimiento, lo que reduce las pérdidas de potencia de un ventilador grande.

Desventajas:
1. Un eje de transmisión simple o dividido con juntas universales y cojinetes de soporte entre la caja de cambios montada en la parte delantera y el eje trasero puede producir vibraciones, tamborileos, chirridos y otros ruidos bajo ciertas condiciones de operación.

2. El túnel de tierra es necesario para proporcionar espacio libre para la operación de un sistema de eje de hélice y puede afectar el espacio para las piernas de los pasajeros.
3. En el caso de una carcasa rígida para el eje y la transmisión final, el sistema de suspensión no soporta mayor peso, por lo que la calidad de marcha de la suspensión puede verse afectada. La suspensión trasera independiente requiere juntas universales y ejes de transmisión adicionales.
4. Cuando un vehículo con tracción trasera se atasca en el barro, tiende a hundirse más en el suelo a medida que se aleja.
